Kamote is a resilient root crop widely grown across Cebu in backyard gardens, upland farms, and smallholder plots. Easy to grow through vine cuttings, it thrives in poor soils and dry conditions, making it an important food security crop during typhoons and periods of hardship. Both the roots and leaves are eaten, with talbos sa kamote valued for its vitamins and iron, while purple varieties are known for high antioxidant content.

Beyond its nutritional value, kamote has a strong cultural history in the Philippines, associated with endurance, subsistence, and everyday rural life. It appears in snacks like kamote cue, local dishes such as binignit, and ongoing conversations around biodiversity and food sovereignty in Cebu.

Germination / Propagation

Plant vine cuttings directly into loose, well-drained soil. Bury 2–3 nodes under the soil and leave several leaves above ground. Keep moist until established. Can also be sprouted from storage roots, then transplanted as slips.1
